Whitney Portal, Lone Pine, California, USA
Start at Whitney Portal (8,360 ft). The Mt. Whitney Trail climbs through pine forest to Lone Pine Lake, then continues past Outpost Camp and Mirror Lake. Navigate the famous 99 switchbacks to Trail Crest (13,600 ft) on the Sierra crest. The final 2 miles traverse the exposed west face with cables on the narrowest sections. The summit features a stone shelter. Permits required year-round; summer is most popular but winter ascents require mountaineering skills.
