Bunny Flat Trailhead, Mt. Shasta, California, USA
The Avalanche Gulch route begins at Bunny Flat (6,900 ft). Climb through forest to Horse Camp (7,900 ft), then continue up the moraine to Helen Lake camp (10,400 ft). The summit push ascends Avalanche Gulch, a wide snow couloir. Above the Red Banks (12,800 ft), navigate through or around rock bands to Misery Hill. Cross the summit plateau to the true summit pinnacle. Crampons and ice axe essential; rope recommended for crevasses above the Red Banks.
