Begin at La Virgen (4,000m). Hike up the muddy trail through páramo grasslands to the saddle between the two Illiniza peaks. From the refuge, head north toward Illiniza Norte. The route involves Class 3 scrambling over volcanic rock, with some exposed sections requiring careful footwork. The summit block requires a final steep scramble. No glacier travel required, but rock can be loose.
